AEW hosted the New Year's Smash edition of Dynamite last night, and the show couldn't have gotten off to a more chaotic start. MJF opened the show, coming out to address the crowd following his World Title win at Worlds End. However, things soon spiraled out of control, to the point that Tony Khan might be compelled to suspend two of his biggest stars involved in a serious incident instigated by the segment.
At AEW Worlds End, the Salt of the Earth bested former champion Samoa Joe, Hangman Page and Swerve Strickland in a 4-way bout to become AEW World Champion for the second time in his career. On Dynamite last night, the Wolf of Wrestling addressed the crowd, preaching his usual spiel about being great before dissing his Worlds End opponents. He then revealed that he intends to carry the brand-new Triple B version of the World Title instead of the regular belt. The segment continued with a surprise video package from Kenny Omega challenging MJF for the title, but what followed was a serious incident that shocked viewers.
After Omega disappeared, Hangman and the Mogul appeared in the crowd, steel chains in hand, but security guards stopped them at the barricade. Noticing he was safe, MJF declared he would beat both their asses if they proved worthy of a title shot. At that point, both Page and Strickland broke free of the guards, taking some of them out. However, getting physical with AEW's security personnel could put the promotion's biggest babyfaces in trouble with Tony Khan.
It is possible that Tony Khan doesn't take kindly to the Cowboys' and Strickland's actions and decides to suspend them. That said, this is speculation, and it remains to be seen whether Khan will address this incident.
MJF's first title defense set for AEW Dynamite: Maximum Carnage
While Hangman Page, Swerve Strickland, Samoa Joe, and even Kenny Omega all seem to want a piece of MJF, the Salt of the Earth's first title defense has already been set, and it won't be against any of them. Friedman is set to make his first title defense against Bandido. The two will lock horns at Dynamite: Maximum Carnage on January 14.
Bandido, who earned his shot by winning the Diamond Dynamite Ring last Wednesday, enters his first-ever World title match. While many will bank on MJF to retain his gold, the anticipation for this bout remains high, and it will be interesting to see how it plays out on the night between the two stars.
