Apart from Cam Ward's strong performance during Thursday's joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at AdventHealth Training Center, the Tennessee Titans found another reason for optimism: growing depth at a key position. The session was part of both teams' preparations ahead of the 2025 preseason opener.
Nick Suss of The Tennessean noted, "As has been the case throughout camp, the depth at slot receiver is starting to show through."
He pointed to veteran James Proche II, who caught a touchdown from quarterback Brandon Allen, and rookie Xavier Restrepo, who made a sideline catch during a two-minute drill.
"Second-year player Jha'Quan Jackson also earned his most consequential reps of training camp, but he didn't make a noteworthy play," Suss added.
Last season, the Titans' receiver corps did not feature prominently in receiving stats, which were led by Calvin Ridley with 1,017 yards and four touchdowns.
Tyler Boyd, who splits time between outside and slot receiver, had 390 receiving yards. Emerging talents like Jackson, who saw meaningful reps in practice, recorded limited production with just one catch for eight yards in 2024.
Slot receivers will be key for the Titans as they aim to help rookie quarterback Cam Ward gain confidence under center. It's never easy being a rookie, especially if you hold the distinction of being the No. 1 pick.
Having a reliable and deep group of slot receivers provides him with safe, quick options, which can ease decision-making and reduce the pressure on him.
