Titans have a surprise tight end position battle on their hands at training camp

It seemed pretty straightforward when the Tennessee Titans drafted Cam Ward No. 1 overall that he had an established tight end.

Chigoziem Okonkwo is the incumbent, and with his talent, the outside world assumed he'd remain TE1, no questions asked.

But ESPN's Turron Davenport speculated in a new blurb on Monday that Okonkwo's gig may not be as safe as expected.

The Titans drafted the talented rookie Gunner Helm out of Texas, and he's in the picture, too.

Here's what Davenport wrote:

"Chig Okonkwo is the incumbent, but rookie Gunnar Helm will push for the spot -- or at the very least, get reps in two-tight-end sets. Both players have really caught quarterback Cameron Ward's attention. Okonkwo spent time with Ward in Miami to get a head start on developing chemistry. The Titans staff likes to get Okonkwo the ball and let him pick up yards after the catch. Helm has done a good job working the middle of the field and making catches in traffic. Second-year tight end David Martin-Robinson is an option who is seeing a lot of action in the quick game with this speed. Josh Whyle has faded somewhat, but there's a good chance the Titans keep four tight ends."

The good news for Okonkwo and Helm is that they have different skillsets.

That might be bad news, too, because it could prevent either of them from fully seizing the reins at this position.

It's really not a problem for Tennessee or for Ward, who will both gladly use both weapons as best they can.

It is more of a fantasy football-type of problem, where players would want one tight end to get all the action.

That doesn't seem to be how it'll go with the Titans, though. Okonkwo will get the short plays designed for YAC, and Helm will make plays in traffic. Together, it should be a good development for Ward to have his best shot of success as a rookie, and for the Titans, that's really all that matters.
