Justin Fields made a throwback impression in his arrival on Thursday. The New York Jets quarterback was seen walking to the field of Gillette Stadium for a Thursday Night Football game against the New England Patriots, and his choice of outfit was interesting, to say the least.

He sported a tan wool jacket over a black T-shirt with a face for a graphic, a cap, a necklace, and what appeared to be jeans, making him look like a rapper:

The Jets will be entering the game without top pass-catcher Garrett Wilson, whose knee injury has sent him to injured reserve for the first time in his career. During Tuesday's press conference, Fields said about the development:

"I mean it's tough, but it is what it is. Kind of like Cincy week, there's going to be guys that have opportunities to go make plays. But, it's definitely tough when one of your best guys on offense is out. But, like I said, it's an opportunity for some other guys to come in and make plays."

Insider predicts Jets releasing Justin Fields after 2025 season

When the Jets signed Justin Fields in the offseason, there was much optimism. He and a new regime of Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey were projected to help the team move closer to respectability, even should the playoffs remain out of reach.

Instead, it has been mostly disastrous. They lost their first seven games, and Fields has been catastrophically bad as a passer in eight starts: only 63.5% of passes completed for 1,143 yards and a measly six touchdowns, while eating 25 sacks for a cumulative 181-yard loss.

And ESPN's Bill Barnwell warns that it will mean only one thing -- a parting of ways and even an early retirement, given that most teams will not likely want to lean towards his run-heavy style:

“Barring a stunning second half, the Jets aren’t going to be thinking about Fields as their starter in 2026. ...The most likely scenario is the Jets release Fields over the winter, saving them the additional $10 million he would be owed in 2027.”

As for his replacement, CBS Sports' Josh Edwards predicts that it will be Alabama's Ty Simpson:

"Ty Simpson has been arguably the most efficient passer in college football this season. He's not ideal in terms of height, but even a competent passing game would be a significant improvement over the Jets' current situation."

The 2026 NFL draft will be held from April 23 to 25 in Pittsburgh.
