Coach Prime took over the Buffs, who finished 1-11 a year before his arrival. During his debut campaign in 2023, he led them to a 4-8 record. He improved on this performance last season, helping the program to a 9-4 record and an Alamo Bowl appearance, where they lost to the BYU Cougars.
After the end of the season, Sanders lost several of his talents to this year's NFL draft. This included his sons, Shedeur and Shilo, and 2024 Heisman winner Travis Hunter. The Buffs provided Coach Prime with a five-year extension worth $54 million before the start of the season in March.

After Saturday's showdown, Coach Prime did not allow his players to talk with the media. He took sole responsibility for the loss and asked fans not to blame the players and the coaching staff.
"I'm telling you, it's on me," Coach Prime said. "Criticize me. I've been criticized when I came out of the womb. ... So, it's one me. But I know what the situation is. I know what the problem is, and I'll fix it.The Buffs will next face the West Virginia Mountaineers next Saturday at noon ET.
