The Minnesota Timberwolves have found some success in the postseason, but they might still need a shakeup in the offseason.
In the weeks leading up to the 2024-25 season, the Timberwolves shocked the NBA world by sending Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks for Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo. After finishing a game out of the first seed last season, Minnesota’s blockbuster deal seemingly set the franchise back.
While the regular season didn’t always look pretty for the Timberwolves, they find themselves leading the Los Angeles Lakers 3-1 in the first round and could close out the series with a win on Wednesday. Although the Timberwolves could win this series and have a feasible path to the conference finals, they still might not be close enough to championship contention.
In a recent article from Bleacher Report, it looked to find the best deals for each postseason team. For the Timberwolves to reach their ceiling, they might need to move on from Randle.
Although Randle didn’t quite put up All-Star numbers in the regular season, he has averaged 22.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.5 assists for Minnesota in the postseason thus far. His numbers look good and he has made a clear impact, but he still might not be the perfect fit.
So, sending Randle and a 2030 first-round pick swap to Brooklyn for Cam Johnson and Ziaire Williams could make sense. This deal might not make sense for the Timberwolves if they fully believe in the pairing of Anthony Edwards and Randle, but if they want to pivot to an even more Edwards-centric offense, Johnson would be the perfect pairing.

Johnson’s addition would give Edwards more spacing and would give Minnesota another shooter who can catch fire. The Timberwolves don’t necessarily have a clear weakness that needs to be addressed, but going all-in on Edwards could provide some phenomenal results moving forward.
