Tigers shut down outfielder with injury setback; postseason status in question

Although the Detroit Tigers lost their title as the best team in the American League, they are just a few games away from clinching the AL Central title. With just 12 games left in the season, they will look towards recapturing the top seed for the postseason.

Detroit has received mostly positive news on some injuries within the team, including a sigh of relief in Cy Young Award hopeful Tarik Skubal after he had an injury scare in his most recent start.

However, there is a specific drawback in one of their outfielders that will put his status for the rest of the 2025 season in question.

Tigers shut down Matt Vierling after rehab setback

Before the Detroit Tigers' pivotal divisional matchup against the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday, the team announced multiple reports on injured players. It included an upsetting update to outfielder Matt Vierling.

Vierling, 28, has missed over a month while suffering from an oblique strain in early August. MLive.com's Evan Woodbury revealed that the third-year outfielder has been experiencing "a recurrence of discomfort in his left oblique," and the Tigers paused his rehab assignment.

Detroit has less than two weeks remaining in the regular season, putting Vierling's status for the postseason in question.

“It’s just a matter of getting him reevaluated now to see what he can tolerate, what we can hope for, and where he’s at physically," manager A.J. Hinch said.

An injury-plagued 2025 season has limited Vierling to just 31 games. He strained his rotator cuff during Spring Training, sidelining him for nearly two months to start the year. Just four games into his return, he was diagnosed with shoulder inflammation, forcing him to miss another month.

Through the short dosage of action this season, Vierling has a .239 batting average, .310 on-base percentage, .307 slugging percentage, and .617 OPS while hitting just one home run and 11 RBI.
