Although the Detroit Tigers have yet to clinch the NL Central, it can happen soon if the Cleveland Guardians are unable to catch up with them.
Entering Wednesday, the Tigers have a 5.5 game lead over the Guardians, but Cleveland is making it interesting after winning 11 of their last 13.
Injuries in the pitching staff have been a problem for the Tigers all season, but they dealt some fortunate news on one of their most reliable bullpen pitchers.
Kyle Finnegan in line to start rehab assignment on Thursday
The Detroit Tigers traded for 34-year-old right-handed pitcher Kyle Finnegan at the trade deadline earlier this summer. Detroit sent pitching prospects Josh Randall and R.J. Sales to the Washington Nationals in exchange for Finnegan.
The start to Finnegan's Tigers career has been extremely productive. Through 12 appearances, he has a 3-0 record, 0.00 ERA, and a 1.05 WHIP with 19 strikeouts in 19.1 innings.
On Sept. 1, Finnegan noticed discomfort in his right groin; later that week, Detroit placed him on the 15-day injured list. The injury seems to be recovering as scheduled, and the former All-Star is in line to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Thursday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reported.

Detroit is hoping to get Finnegan back in the bullpen for them in their pursuit of the World Series in October. Manager A.J. Hinch and staff will monitor the relief pitcher while re-amping his throwing in the minor leagues.
