Alarm bells were going off for Detroit Tigers fans when shortstop Javier Báez exited the game yesterday with a shoulder injury.
It seemed like nothing had provoked the injury, leading to quite a bit of uncertainty. However, as the Detroit Free Press' Evan Petzold reports, the injury was an aggravation of an issue from last month and should not be considered serious.
Petzold notes the initial injury happened on June 14 in a game against the Cincinnati Reds, when Báez attempted a slide into home plate and was tagged out. Here is what Báez said of the injury.
"My shoulder kind of got stuck," Báez said yesterday. "It's been bothering me, but I feel good. We've been doing treatment."
Tigers manager AJ Hinch also lent his perspective to what happened to his All-Star infielder.
"So Javy came into the dugout and just said he didn't feel right," Hinch said. "I asked him what was going on. He just kept saying he didn't feel right, so I took him out of the game."
Báez clarified his experience further.
"I was just trying to figure it out," Báez said. "I didn't want to keep playing with soreness. It is sore a little bit, but we've been doing treatment today, and we'll do treatment tomorrow, and we'll see how it feels."
Báez added that he does not expect to have a stint on the Injured List then showcased his shoulder's mobility by rotating it in front of Petzold and the rest of the media.
He is not in the lineup tonight against the Pittsburgh Pirates but has not been placed on the Injured List.
