The Detroit Tigers have been struggling to stay afloat this season, especially since Tarik Skubal went on the injured list. While they've somewhat bounced back, this team is trending towards being major trade deadline sellers.
One player whose absence has negatively impacted this team has been Justin Verlander. He's made just one start, a 3.2 inning outing while allowing five earned runs, in his return season. Though he's been out for over two months, he was set to return this weekend.
However, according to Chris McCosky of The Detroit News, Verlander isn't going to come off the injured list, as he sustained a hamstring strain in his recent bullpen session, and will remain out for a while longer.
Tigers get bad Justin Verlander news ahead of projected return
"Justin Verlander will be staying on the IL," McCosky reports. "He strained his left hamstring in his bullpen session Wednesday. He's not starting Sunday. Keider Montero will start finale."
This is some massively disappointing news for the Tigers and Tigers fans. In what was meant to be an exciting return for Verlander with his first start in Detroit with the Tigers since 2017, the veteran right-hander got some bad news.
A hamstring strain is a rough injury for Verlander to sustain as he worked his way back from the IL due to a hip issue.

While he wasn't coming into this weekend starting at 100%, it was still exciting to hear he'd return for the Tigers and pitch in Detroit as a member of the team for the first time in nearly a decade.
Such an exciting return will be put on hold, as Verlander's setback is going to keep him on the injured list, and the future Hall of Famer will have to work his way back from injury once more.
Verlander won't make his scheduled Sunday start, as his hamstring injury will keep him away from the mound for a little while, and push his Detroit homecoming even further back this season.
