The Detroit Tigers are riding high early on this season. As the calendar nears the month of June, Detroit owns the best record in Major League Baseball, sitting atop perhaps the toughest division in the American League Central.
The trade deadline is not until July 31, but it's safe to say that unless something drastic occurs, Detroit is going to be buying rather than selling. It was after a deadline sale that they took off in 2024.
Detroit went after Alex Bregman last offseason but lost out to the Boston Red Sox, and third base is a need for them.
Bleacher Report's Tim Kelly proposed the idea of Detroit looking to the St. Louis Cardinals, who they play this week at Busch Stadium for some help at third base.
"The Tigers likely regret not signing Alex Bregman in the offseason, as he's performing like an AL MVP candidate for Boston, while Jace Jung was recently optioned to Triple-A after hitting just .111 in 18 games. Whether it's Nolan Arenado, Ryan McMahon or someone else, the hot corner appears to be the most-pressing need in Detroit," Kelly wrote.

Arenado is struggling with St. Louis after a hot start. He's hitting .247/.323/.380 with just four home runs, 18 RBI and a .702 OPS.
The Cardinals haven't received much interest in the eight-time All-Star thus far. It's also worth noting that last offseason, the Tigers were not on Arenado's list of preferred destinations.
However, that could change with Detroit dominating the rest of the league. And with third base being a need, they could expand their list of targets.
It would likely take the Cardinals falling out of contention to even consider trading their star third baseman. But if that does happen, Detroit could be an ideal fit.
It will certainly be interesting to see where things stand at the deadline, but it's clear that the Tigers need help at third base and will likely look for ways to improve at the deadline.
