The Detroit Tigers are in the midst of their best season in years. They currently hold Major League Baseball’s best record at 48-28, and have all the looks of a serious World Series contender.
As such, the Tigers could have multiple representatives starting at next month’s All-Star game. MLB.com’s Jason Beck provides an update on the Tigers’ latest All-Star voting.
Per Beck, The Tigers haven’t had multiple players in the All-Star Game starting lineup since Miguel Cabrera and Max Scherzer each notched the start in 2013, and they haven’t had three All-Star starters, or multiple players voted into the starting lineup, since Iván Rodriguez, Magglio Ordóñez and Placido Polanco in 2007.
So far, Gleyber Torres leads AL second basemen, Riley Greene is second among AL outfielders, and Javier Báez is fifth among AL outfielders, with Kerry Carpenter currently in seventh.
According to Beck, Torres could become the first Tigers’ second baseman to start the All-Star game since Polanco in 2007. Lou Whitaker (1984-1986) is the only other Tiger to start the All-Star game at the position. Also, Riley Greene could become just the fifth Tigers outfielder to be named an All-Star starter.
Additionally, Dillon Dingler is third among AL catchers, roughly 54,000 votes behind second-place Alejandro Kirk, and Spencer Torkleson and Zach McKinstry are within the top five at first base and third base, respectively.
The first phase of All-Star voting will conclude on June 26. From there, the top two vote-getters at each position, and the top six outfielders will move on to phase two to determine the starters.
