Tigers call up top 10 prospect for major league debut

Though the Detroit Tigers struggled in their first series of the second half against the Texas Rangers, they are still, record-wise, the best team in the American League. 

And possessing one of, if not the, best starting pitchers in the league in Tarik Skubal, who is still pitching like it's his Cy Young Award season from last year. 

Now, one player that could be taking his place alongside Skubal in the Tigers' starting rotation is about to show the major league crowd what he brings to the Detroit team. 

First reported by MLB.com's Jason Beck, No. 10 prospect Troy Melton has been called up by the team and has been penciled in by Detroit skipper A.J. Hinch to make his debut Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Melton was selected by Detroit in the fourth round of the 2022 MLB Draft with 117th overall pick out of San Diego State University. 

In 16 starts for Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo, Melton produced a 2-3 record, a 2.99 earned run average, and 101 strikeouts. 

And now, at 12:35 P.M. EST on Wednesday, the 24-year-old will look to make his mark on the professional stage against a struggling Pittsburgh ball club.
