When the new free agency period opens up in just a couple of weeks, the Toronto Blue Jays' Bo Bichette will be the best shortstop on the market.
Bichette suffered a left-knee sprain in early September, but has since returned to be on the Blue Jays' World Series roster. However, following the conclusion of this year's Fall Classic, Bichette will become a free agent, and his sweepstakes will be one of the biggest storylines this offseason.
Tigers and Phillies included in potential best fits for Bo Bichette
In a recent predictions piece by The Athletic's Jim Bowden, Bo Bichette's contract prediction is seven years, $189 million.
"Contract prediction: 7-years, $189 million"
Also linked to the contract prediction were other MLB teams that could be in play for signing the star shortstop. Both the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies were listed as potential options.
Detroit has a need for a bat on the left side of the infield, and the Phillies could move Bichette to either third or second base. Philadelphia's front office will have a lot on its hands with other roster personnel decisions.
Over 139 games this season, Bichette hit .311 with 18 home runs and 44 doubles. His OPS+ was 129, and had a total of 181 hits. Shortstops generally are treated well in free agency, so it's no surprise that the seven-year deal is worth so much, but now it just comes down to who will commit to Bichette for that long.
