Three things to watch for in Jets’ preseason opener vs. Buccaneers

Three things to watch for in the Jets’ preseason opener against the Buccaneers on Friday night at MetLife Stadium:

1. The starters are going to play, but we don’t know how long. It will be interesting to see how the starting offense looks after a rough week.

Geno Smith & Co. did not perform well in joint practices with the Buccaneers.

It sounds like Tampa Bay coach Todd Bowles is resting his starters, so this should be an easier task for the Jets offense.

2. Jets rookie edge rusher David Bailey has been making highlight plays during training camp.

Can he continue to do it under the lights?

Bailey has an explosive first step and looks every bit like a player taken No. 2 overall in the draft.

3. These preseason games are very important for rookie quarterback Cade Klubnik, who is trying to win the No. 2 job behind Smith.

Klubnik has been up and down in practice, but he could solidify his hold on the job with strong performances in the preseason.

Bailey Zappe is his chief in-house competition but general manager Darren Mougey could still swing a deal for a veteran backup before the season.
