Three people were killed when a twin-engine airplane plummeted into woods in upstate New York shortly after takeoff Monday night, with federal aviation officials now investigating the deadly crash.
The small 1976 Piper Aerostar 601P took off from Adirondack Regional Airport shortly after 10:30 p.m., and lost contact with ground communication after reaching just 100 feet in altitude and crashing into a wooded area near Saranac Lake, state police said.
“We both flew out of bed and ran outside,” local resident Jodie Wells told WPTZ-TV News. “I could hear some bangs and loud popping. It was scary. It was loud.
“We have been sad and out of sorts ever since,” Wells added.
Resident William Cole said, “It definitely sounded almost identical to thunder.”
The names of the pilot and the two passengers have not been released.
Doorbell cam from a nearby home captured the haunting sound of the crash, which shut down portions of the Adirondack Trail on Tuesday.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the small aircraft went down “under unknown circumstances” shortly after takeoff, and burst into flames, killing all three on board.
The tragic crash is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.
