'They wasted a 13th pick with a future backup’: Aqib Talib sounds off on Rams selecting Ty Simpson

  • Former Los Angeles Rams cornerback Aqib Talib was not happy with the team selecting quarterback Ty Simpson with their 13th overall pick on Thursday.

Talib appeared on "The Arena: Gridiron" and said that he thinks the Rams had the worst draft on Day 1.

"The worst draft, I'm going the Rams," Talib said. "I feel like they dropped the ball. With Matthew Stafford and that team that you have, you need somebody who can help you win right now. "Who can help us beat Seattle right now? That's what I'm doing with the 13th pick. There were guys out there who could help them beat Seattle right now.

"They wasted a 13th pick with a future backup," Talib said.

Ty Simpson pick draws mixed reactions

The Rams' selection of Simpson with their first-round pick did not come with much praise, and that's certainly the case with Talib.

The expectation was that the Rams would bolster their wide receiver room alongside Puka Nacua and Davante Adams, or even add an elite offensive lineman for the future. Either one of those players would have helped them this season and for years to come.

However, general manager Les Snead and head coach Sean McVay decided to pick their quarterback of the future. Simpson won't help them win this upcoming season or even in 2027; however,  the Rams appear confident he can be the heir apparent to Stafford when he decides to call his career quits.

The 23-year-old has only started in 15 games beyond the high school level.
