The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox making a blockbuster trade for any of the better players on their roster doesn't seem likely at this point, though, with how well the Yankees have played and how poorly the Red Sox have looked throughout the year, there's really no telling what could happen.
The Red Sox are already 10 games back in the American League East, sitting six games below .500 at 17-24. To put it lightly, the Red Sox are an ideal team to start selling off pieces, and there's an ideal candidate for the Yankees to pursue if Boston wants to go in that direction. Funny enough, that's none other than Aroldis Chapman, who some believe will be traded.
“Aroldis Chapman completely reinvented himself last season, evolving from a high-velocity guy into a high-velocity guy who aims. Chapman's stuff has always been elite, but now he's commanding his pitches, with a sparkling 6.8 percent walk rate. He has a 0.77 ERA and 0.86 WHIP, with 14 strikeouts in 11.2 innings out of the bullpen. He's the most dominant closer in the American League right now,” Christopher Kline of FanSided wrote.
Chapman has been just as good as ever throughout the 2026 campaign, absolutely dominating hitters at a ridiculous level in his 12.2 innings. He's struck out 16, walked only three, and given up just one earned run, good for a 0.71 ERA.
The funny part here is that while the Yankees could use him and it isn't very likely the Red Sox would trade him, there's also the fact that he quit on the team just a few years ago.
Had Chapman not done that, perhaps the Yankees would view him differently, but for both the Red Sox's reason and the quitting problem, it's probably unlikely that a deal ever happens.
