There’s been so much Wizard of Oz news in the past few weeks that you’d think it was the anniversary of L. Frank Baum‘s classic political allegory The Wonderful Wizard of OZ, originally published in 1900. Oh wait, if it was published in 1900, I guess that means that it is the 125th anniversary of the novel’s publication, the 123rd anniversary of the first Broadway adaptation, and the 86th anniversary of the 1939 live-action film starring Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Billie Burke, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley, Ray Bolger, and Margaret Hamilton

Today, Dynamite Entertainment and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products announced a complete graphic novel adaptation of The Wizard of Oz by superstar writer and artist Soo Lee, who is known for her work on DC/RWBY, Carmilla: The First Vampire, Ash & Thorn, ThunderCats: Cheetara, Disney Villains: Maleficent, as well as cover artwork for publishers like Image, Valiant, Oni Press, AfterShock, BOOM!, Black Mask, and more. Lee’s all-ages adaptation of the 1939 film arrives in September 2025.

“I’m not reinventing the wheel, but I’m adding my interpretation to the history of this legendary story,” said Lee. “I was allowed more pages to indulge in and take my time on certain scenes, so I took advantage of the comics medium. I wanted to really shine light on Dorothy and her friends’ relationships and emotions.”

The official PR from Dynamite reads:

The Wizard of Oz tells the tale of a young Kansas girl who dreams of a better world “somewhere over the rainbow.” When Dorothy is thrust into the eye of a tornado and lands in the fantasy world of Oz, she soon finds herself in a heap of trouble with three hapless misfits to guide, an evil witch at her heels, and no way to get home. The Wizard of Oz: The Official Film Adaptation Graphic Novel is an enduring tale and message of friendship, intelligence, heart, and bravery.

In bringing this peerless epic to the graphic novel page in her vision, Soo Lee was granted access to the opened “vault” and worked from the original film screenplay by Noel Langley, Florence Ryerson, and Edgar Allan Woolf. This means though longtime fans of the story and film will get to see all their favorite moments, there may be elements included across the 128 gorgeous full-color pages that may be less familiar.
