Sundance Head Dishes on Winning "The Voice"
Jason "Sundance" Head is sharing details about a terrifying experience.
Days after being hospitalized for getting shot in the stomach near his Texas ranch, the Voice winner—who competed on season 11 of the reality competition series—spoke out on the life-threatening incident, which occurred while he was packing up his car to go on a solo hunting excursion.
"I started loading the Jeep to go to the other side of the property and put everything I needed in there," Sundance recalled in a video shared to his Facebook Nov. 18. "Last thing to do was grab my backpack, and I travel all the time with a revolver in it. It's old school and looks just like the kind of gun you would see in a western movie."
But the 46-year-old forgot to use a strap to secure the firearm in its holster. So, when he put the bag in his passenger seat, it fell out into the vehicle.
"I set it down, and I backed up to walk away and I was shocked," Sundance continued. "It happened that fast. And what happened was that revolver slid out of the case, and it hit the door jamb on the Jeep, on the floor step, and it shot me."
In his state of shock, the American Idol alum struggled to comprehend what had happened until he felt his stomach.
"The blood came out through my fingers," he remembered. "And to be honest with you, man, I was very scared. Then I knew I was shot."
After reaching in his pockets to retrieve his phone and finding them "already full of blood," Sundance knew he needed help fast and "took off running" to find it.

"I jumped our cattle gate," he said. "I jumped that thing, I'm telling you, with one bound like I was 15 or 16 years old again... That's just the first little spot of divine intervention in this whole thing."
Once he made it to the highway, Sundance tried to flag down passing cars for a while before someone actually stopped.
"After about a dozen cars, I had a gentleman come back to help me, and he was like an angel from heaven," the "Darlin' Don't Go" singer said. "I was never so glad to see somebody in my life."
Following his Nov. 15 accident, Sundance was airlifted by a helicopter and taken to a hospital in Tyler, Texas, before being released late that night. He is now recovering at home, according to a statement from his wife Misty that was shared to his Facebook Nov. 16.
"The doctor has decided Sundance Head does not need surgery," his agent told E! News in a Nov. 15 statement, "as the bullet did not affect any vital organs and is lodged in a fatty area in his stomach through the navel."
