Count Whoopi Goldberg among the millions of Americans — including Republican lawmakers — none too pleased about President Donald Trump‘s tariff plan. On this morning’s episode of The View, Goldberg and her co-hosts discussed, and widely criticized, Trump’s tariffs against countries across the globe.
Goldberg kicked off the chat by declaring that the “financial markets are in a free-fall this morning” after the tariffs were announced, and noted that even some politicians from Trump’s own party are not too enthusiastic about the tariffs, before playing clips of figures like Sen. Rand Paul and Sen. Thom Tillis warning of the negative consequences of Trump’s plan.
Goldberg seemed to hint that she’d be personally affected, too, as owner of the Whoopi Prosecco brand.
“It is a bad idea, I’m sorry,” Goldberg said. “Again, if things were done in such a way where you could follow the logic, I would be all for it and say I really don’t like this or I like that. But I don’t know what he’s doing. I don’t like what he’s doing, ’cause it affects if you are importing or you’re exporting.”
She then pointedly added, “So if you make Prosecco, not the greatest thing. You don’t want to hear about tariffs. You don’t want to hear about it.”

Goldberg produces her wine in Italy, which is subject to a 20% tariff on all goods, according to Food & Wine. The outlet reports that Trump’s tariffs will lead to “higher prices for consumers and financial strain on businesses across the wine supply chain, from importers to retailers.”
Goldberg has plugged her wine brand on the show before, previously popping some bottles to celebrate her November 13 birthday. While the product was released a few years ago, she recently updated the packaging and is re-promoting the wine.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, she said she was inspired the make her Prosecco because “everyone else had tequila and all these other things, and there weren’t really any women of color having anything to do with prosecco.”
While Trump’s 10% baseline tariff on countries like El Salvador, Singapore, Brazil and the U.K. goes into effect April 5, his tariffs for what the White House describes as the “worst offenders” — including the EU, China and South Africa — go into effect April 9, per The BBC.
The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
