Many of the biggest games yet to come in Texas will take place once the playoffs get started in November. In the meantime, the Allen [TX] Eagles at the Prosper [TX] Eagles Friday afternoon is about as big as it gets in the Lone Star State, and the contest between the two powerhouses is The Sporting News High School Football Game of the Week.
Both teams enter the contest ranked in The Sporting News High School Football Top 25 with identical 7-0 records. Their rivalry has blossomed over the past seven years, becoming one of the most anticipated annual matchups in Texas, and this is the biggest game in the series, yet. It's arguably the game of the year so far in Texas, but it will be played in slightly different circumstances.
Due to the threat of storms in the Dallas metro area Friday night, the game has been moved to early afternoon, now scheduled for 2 p.m. EST (1 p.m. CST local) at Children's Health Stadium at PISD in Prosper. The energy from a night game with a huge crowd at Prosper's impressive facility is always palpable, and it's unclear what impact that might have on attendance since it will now be played during standard working hours.

The Background
Both of these schools have proud football traditions, and both programs have won state championships in the not-too-distant past. Allen has won five state championships in football since 2008, all of them at the Texas UIL Class 5A or 6A levels. Prosper also won a state championship in 2008 in Class 3A, but in the two decades since then, the district has grown immensely as the urban sprawl of the Dallas metro area continues to swallow up the suburbs north of the city. Prosper, in fact, has grown from a city of fewer than 9,000 in 2008 to nearly 49,000 with an increase of more than 18,000 alone in just five years since the 2020 census.
The growth has been enough to push Prosper up into the Class 6A ranks, and they've been district mates with Allen since 2018, engaging in a spirited rivalry ever since.
Top Recruits
- Allen has two 3-star seniors ranked in the 247sports.com Class of 2026 prospects for the state of Texas, starting with WR Caleb Smith, who's committed to Arizona. Safety Kai Wheaton is the other top senior, and he's onboard with Oregon State for now. Junior safety James Roberson is also a 3-star prospect, and he's uncommitted.
- Prosper wins the numbers game when it comes to the 247sports.com rankings with five rated senior prospects, including three 4-star recruits. Texas Tech commit and 4-star OT prospect Bryce Gilmore is the top-ranked recruit along with fellow 4-star IOLs Sean Stover (Duke) and Zaden Krempin (Texas A&M), comprising what is one of the Lone Star State's top offensive lines. Jake Johnson, meanwhile, is a 3-star DL committed to USC, and WR Lathon Latiolais plans to matriculate at Tulsa.
When Allen has the ball ...
Allen seeks balance on offense with 202 running plays this year compared to 180 passing plays. Of course, the Eagles generally have a big lead early, and they can seek to bleed the clock by keeping the ball on the ground in the later stages of games so they might be more inclined to go to the airways early. It's been a winning formula with senior QB Jeremiah Daoud passing for 1,396 yards with 18 touchdowns and only 2 interceptions. That's allowed the Eagles to give some reps to freshman QB Ty Snell who has thrown for 752 yards of his own with 7 touchdowns and just a single pick.
The big leads have also allowed the Eagles to spread the carries around at running back where both Lyndon Spriggs, a junior, and senior Jaden Hambric each have 60-plus totes with Spriggs (60-398 yards, 6 TDs) leading the way in yards and Hambric holding the edge in touchdowns (64-295 yards, 7 TDs). Senior Caleb Smith (33 rec.-542 yards, 6 TDs) and sophomore Josyah Johnson (34 rec.-464 yards, 7 TDs) give the Eagles a dynamic one-two punch in the receiving lanes.
When Prosper has the ball ...
Prosper leans more on the aerial game overall with QB Braeden Imhoff passing for 1,899 yards with 18 touchdowns of his own. Latiolais has been the beneficiary of nearly half that output, compiling 826 receiving yards this season while making 10 trips to the end zone. Allen's high-powered secondary led by their two ranked safeties will be challenged to limit the damage, something they've excelled at, albeit, against lesser competition.
Keys to the game
Allen wins if they can contain Prosper's wide-open passing game on its own home field. This will be an emotional game, and there are playmakers on both sides of the field that could swing this game in one direction or the other. If Allen can stay grounded emotionally – and on offense – then this is one of those games where time of possession could prove to be a beneficial stat. The best way to control Prosper's big aerial attack is just to keep the ball out of their hands, and Allen could lean more on its ground game early in this one to maintain possession and limit the potential damage.
Prosper wins if they are successful in establishing their vaunted passing attack against an Allen defense that yields less than seven points per game. If the Eagles can move the ball effectively against a defense of Allen's caliber, then this game might turn into a shootout with the teams trading blows. Allen isn't used to playing close back-and-forth games, but Prosper, on the other hand, has been tested against quality opponents, including a season-opening 29-22 win at home over the Westlake [Austin, TX] Chaparrals. Prosper's mettle has been forged in the fires of competition while Allen's resolve has yet to be tested in like manner, and if this game is close late, that could tip the scales in Prosper's favor, especially in front of a home crowd.
Looking Ahead
The winner of this game will have a strong claim to be the top team in Texas, although the final word on that won't be written until the playoffs conclude. But both teams should go on to win their final two regular-season games, and then the only question is whether we get a rematch down the road.
Series history
These teams have played seven times since Prosper moved up to Class 6A in 2018 with Allen holding a 4-3 advantage. Allen won last year's meeting, 22-7, but Prosper won the three previous meetings from 2021 to 2023 by a total of 11 points. That included a 37-36 win by Prosper in 2023, and it won't be any surprise if Friday's game goes down to the wire yet again.
