The Cincinnati Bengals have proven they can make an exception.
Just so far, they won't make one for Trey Hendrickson.
The Bengals historically don't give multiple years of guaranteed money in contracts. That's the big holdup in Hendrickson's negotiations with Cincinnati, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Schefter writes that just this offseason, the star trio of Myles Garrett, T.J. Watt and Maxx Crosby have all gotten three years of guaranteed money on their extensions. The Bengals are currently offering Hendrickson one.
That's potentially costly in its own way if Hendrickson's holdout continues into the season. The Bengals can't afford to not have their man with consecutive 17.5-sack seasons on the field.
It's also a contrast to the exception the Bengals made earlier this offseason when they gave Ja'Marr Chase multiple guaranteed years on his new deal.

Chase is younger than Hendrickson, sure, and he's the most important partner the Bengals have with franchise QB Joe Burrow.
It still can't sit well with Hendrickson that Cincinnati would break its own rule for Chase and not for him, though.
And it seems like Hendrickson is committed to holding out until someone compromises on that reality with him.
