The Patriots revamped their free agency approach — and the NFL is taking notes

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Shortly after Super Bowl 2026 ends Sunday and the confetti is still lying on the ground, NFL fans will turn their thoughts to free agency. 

It is an annual exercise to ask and wonder how aggressive teams will be, look at salary cap space and lists of available free agents. Fans dream of massive signings that can turn their franchises around. 

Most of the time spending big in free agency does not work. Then, you look at the 2025 Patriots. 

New England went from 4-13 to 14-3 and the Super Bowl for many reasons from Mike Vrabel to Drake Maye, but you can’t overlook what the Patriots accomplished last offseason in free agency. They spent a league-high $364.3 million, with $192.9 million of that guaranteed.
