Offense may grab headlines in the NFL. But, as the old adage goes, "defense wins championships."
The league's finest sides tend to invest on the defensive side of the ball. The Patriots averaged just 18 points per game in the postseason. But they surrendered 10.3 points per game across the wild-card, divisional and championship rounds, rocketing them to the title game.
The same could be said for the Seahawks, who held Drake Maye and Co. to just 13 points in their season finale. Attacking play excites the senses, serving as the impetus for so much of the gridiron's mysticism.
But good defenders are undeniable. In many ways, their impact can be shrouded in mystery to the untrained eye.
But NFL front offices pay notice. In recent years, the league's finest defensive players have gotten just rewards for their exploits, seeing their salaries blossom as sacks, fumbles and interceptions pile up.
So, just who is the NFL's highest-paid defender? Here's what you need to know.

NFL highest-paid defensive players
Salary is best measured through the average annual value (AAV) of a player's contract. For example, the salaries on a four-year, $100 million deal can differ by year, particularly as teams work to restructure contracts to convert some money into signing bonuses, but a player on a four-year, $100 million deal is still making an average of $25 million annually.
Here are the NFL's highest-paid defensive players by average annual value:
| Rank | Player | AAV | Team |
| 1 | Micah Parsons | $46.5 million | Packers |
| 2 | Aidan Hutchinson | $45 million | Lions |
| 3 | T.J. Watt | $41 million | Steelers |
| 4 | Danielle Hunter | $40.1 million | Texans |
| 5 | Myles Garrett | $40 million | Browns |
| 6 | Maxx Crosby | $35.5 million | Ravens |
| 7 | Nick Bosa | $34 million | 49ers |
| 8 | Chris Jones | $31.75 million | Chiefs |
| 9 | Trent McDuffie | $31 million | Rams |
| 10 | Sauce Gardner | $30.1 million | Colts |
1. Micah Parsons, EDGE, Packers
- Annual salary: $46.5 million
Parsons was greeted with fanfare when he arrived in Green Bay courtesy of a trade with the Cowboys. The star EDGE had a very public falling out with his former employer prior to his move, with Jerry Jones unwilling to make Parsons the highest-paid defender in the sport.
The Packers honored this request, agreeing terms to a four-year, $186 million deal with Parsons upon his arrival. He enjoyed a sterling first season at Lambeau Field, tallying 12.5 sacks in 14 games before suffering a torn ACL in Week 15.

2. Aidan Hutchinson, EDGE, Lions
- Annual salary: $45 million
Hutchinson became one of the league's highest-paid defenders partway through the 2025 season, inking a four-year, $180 million extension with the side that drafted him, the Lions.
Detroit struggled mightily in 2025, failing to qualify for the playoffs. Hutchinson wasn't to blame; he tallied a career-best 14.5 sacks in 17 games, finishing fifth in Defensive Player of the Year voting.
3. T.J. Watt, EDGE, Steelers
- Annual salary: $41 million
The Steelers made Watt the highest-paid defender in the league ahead of the 2025 season, agreeing terms to a three-year, $123 million deal with the former Defensive Player of the Year winner.
When healthy and firing, Watt is one of the sport's finest pass-rushers. He toiled a bit in 2025, though, recording just seven sacks in 14 games.
4. Danielle Hunter, Texans
- Annual salary: $41 million
Hunter might not have the name recognition of some of his pass-rushing counterparts. But don't get it twisted; the Texans standout is one of football's most feared defenders.
Hunter recorded 15 sacks in 2025, anchoring one of the best defenses in the league. He was rewarded handsomely for his efforts, landing a one-year, $41 million extension in the 2026 offseason.

5. Myles Garrett, EDGE, Browns
- Annual salary: $40 million
Garrett shocked the masses when he signed a mammoth four-year, $160 million extension with the Browns five weeks after requesting a trade in 2025.
One year on, that figure looks like a pittance. Garrett broke the all-time single-season sack record during the ensuing season and secured his second Defensive Player of the Year title. He's likely to put up awe-inspiring numbers once more in 2026.
6. Maxx Crosby, EDGE, Ravens
- Annual salary: $35.5 million
Crosby's future was in flux until he was traded by the Raiders to the Ravens ahead of free agency. The mega contract he signed with Las Vegas in 2025 highlights the value he could provide Baltimore.
The 30-year-old has 69.5 sacks in seven NFL seasons, establishing himself as a force on a defensive line that doesn't carry many. A five-time Pro Bowler, Crosby is one of his position's finest talents.
7. Nick Bosa, EDGE, 49ers
- Annual salary: $34 million
Bosa signed a five-year, $170 million extension with the 49ers in 2023, ending a long stalemate between the two sides with a deal that made him the NFL's highest-paid defensive player all the way until Crosby's deal in 2025.
The former Defensive Player of the Year has been plagued by injury issues as of late, seeing his production slip in 2024 before missing almost all of the 2025 season a torn ACL. He'll look to find his form in 2026, his eighth NFL season..
8. Chris Jones, DT, Chiefs
- Annual salary: $31.75 million
Jones was one of the few bright spots in a dour Chiefs campaign in 2025, tallying seven sacks en route to his seventh-straight Pro Bowl selection. The 31-year-old is closer to the end of his career than the beginning. But he remains a positive force on Kansas City's front line. He's locked into his current deal until 2028, tying his immediate and long-term future to the organization that drafted him.
9. Trent McDuffie, CB, Rams
- Annual salary: $31 million
Days after acquiring him from the Chiefs in a deal that sent the No. 29 pick to Kansas City, the Rams made Trent McDuffie the NFL's highest-paid cornerback. McDuffie agreed to a four-year, $124 million deal with $100 million guaranteed, making him the third cornerback to break the $30 million mark.
McDuffie landed on an All-Pro team twice in his first four NFL seasons, emerging as a core piece of the Chiefs' defense and winning two Super Bowls. After injuries hampered him in 2025, McDuffie is looking to rebound in L.A. in 2026 and beyond.
10. Sauce Gardner, CB, Colts
- Annual salary: $30.1 million
Gardner was one of the more shocking trade deadline departures in recent memory, swapping Jets green for Colts blue midway through the 2025 season. The 25-year-old still ranks among the league's best cornerbacks. His price-tag reflects this; Gardner remains the sport's highest-paid defensive back, earning $100,000 a year more than second-place Derek Stingley Jr.
With two first-team All-Pro selections and a Defensive Rookie of the Year under his belt, it's hard to say his hefty salary isn't warranted.
Which NFL defensive player makes the most guaranteed money?
Hutchinson wears the belt as the league's highest-paid defender based on guaranteed money, making $140.5 million with his latest deal. Parsons isn't too far behind, earning a shade over $136 million.
Garrett, Bosa and Watt round out the edge rushers with guarantees of at least $100 million, while McDuffie is the first defensive back to ever land $100 million in guaranteed money
Jones, meanwhile, is the league's highest-paid defensive tackle in terms of guaranteed money, landing $95 million on his five-year deal.

Which NFL defensive player has the largest overall contract?
Parsons' contract tops the list of defensive deals as far as total value is concerned, with his $186 million contract just putting him past Hutchinson, who is set to earn $180 million.
Bosa ($170 million), Garrett ($160 million) and Jones ($158.8 million) follow the two standard-bearers. No other defenders tout deals above $150 million.
Watt's contract comes replete with guaranteed money. But the three-year deal is wanting as far as total contract value is concerned, falling $18 million short of seventh-place Brian Burns.
All told, 17 defensive players are making at least $100 million over the course of their contract.

Which NFL defensive player has the highest career earnings?
Khalil Mack moved beyond Von Miller in terms of career earnings in 2025 after landing a one-year, $18 million extension ahead of the 2025 season. The former Defensive Player of the Year and four-time first-team All-Pro selection became the first defender to surpass the $200 million threshold with his latest deal. He should build on that total in 2026.
Miller, meanwhile, sits in second place. He remains a threat on the defensive line, collecting nine sacks across 17 games with the Commanders in 2025. A free agent in 2026, Miller should command plenty of interest.
The likes of Myles Garrett, Aidan Hutchinson and Nick Bosa should feature on the list before long, their glimmering contracts certain to penetrate the top 10 in the coming few years. Keep tabs on Danielle Hunter as well; the Texans EDGE is far from the most well-known name on the list. But he continues to garner interest — and gleaming deals — as he ages.
Highest career earnings for defensive players
| 1 | Khalil Mack | $218.1 million |
| 2 | Von Miller | $198.9 million |
| 3 | Ndamukong Suh | $186.5 million |
