SAN DIEGO — If you haven’t noticed, the National League is wide open.
The superteam from up the road here in Southern California that was supposed to dominate and maybe set a record for wins in a season has been crippled by injuries and, though still formidable, can’t be considered such a favorite for the World Series.
With the Dodgers hardly appearing as a collection of immortals, the opportunity is here for the Mets. We say this as the hours pass toward Thursday’s 6 p.m. trade deadline.
The Mets can take the conservative route and add another power arm to the bullpen and call it a day. Such a move would leave the Mets as an improved team with an excellent chance of holding off the Phillies to win the NL East before taking their shot in the postseason.
