New trend going around the Internet where people are buying their cats slabs of concrete and the cats seem to be in love with them more than beds or scratchers. Is this a real thing and more importantly, why?

runsrevenge 19h ago Concrete has a ton of thermal mass! On top of it being a square, it can hold hot and cold temps absorbed into it, and in the summer cats love something cool to lay on, in the winter they love heat.

  • Cats love anything that is warm, and concrete absorbs and retains heat with the best of them! Just like cats love sleeping on heating pads, a concrete slab that's been soaking in the sun is like a textured heating pad that lasts for hours.

I think it's the texture, and the fact concrete absorbs heat so it's nice and toasty. She does this repeatedly every time we go outside.

lonelyronin1 19h ago When I'm walking my cat, he makes a bee line to any concrete or asphalt so he can roll and rub his face. He doesn't do this on any other surface, so I can see people doing this.

ciestaconquistador • 19h ago I don't know, but my cat will roll around like crazy on the concrete on the patio every single time he goes out there.

  • If there's one question that we could answer blindfolded, hands tied, disoriented, or just woken up, it would be the answer to the question: Do cats love scritches? And the answer is of course, yes. They love getting scritches and scratching themselves on anything pawssible. So it makes sense that they would love to scratch themselves against the concrete!

BookishHobbit • 19h ago My cat loves rolling around on our patio. I think some of it having a good scratch, and some of is just it's a nice hard surface (she isn't a fluffy blanket cat).

  • 15

I also sometimes wonder if it's a bit like animals that take dust baths.

  • 16

Thats_my_ping • 19h ago . I'm loving the concrete slab trend! Anything that gives indoor kitties some extra sensory experiences is great in my book.

  • 17

I would take my late cat on little excursions in the yard. He would dive right for where the concrete was. Especially if it had been in the sun. Toasty, textured and full of smells. I think I would love it as well if I was a cat.

  • 18

I have seen some owners say they have to "charge up" the concrete slab by putting it outside in the sun again because their cat gets bored of it. I think that really sums up cat ownership perfectly.

miscreantmom 18h ago My cats generally don't like squishy surfaces. A rug or some laundry (preferably clean) are fine but a pillow or even a mattress pad are not. I wonder if it's because it impedes their maneuverability, like when you can't get out of a really soft couch.

bibliophile222 • 15h ago I watched a video recently that explained soooo much about what cats like to lie on. It's apparently a territorial thing. If they're just sitting on the floor, the whole room is their territory, and they have to

  • 22

guard it. But if they can sit on a bag/slab/box/bed/tape outline, it creates a much smaller territory within the larger space that is easier to protect and makes them feel more at ease.

EitherCoyote660 • 19h ago It's not the concrete. It's the shape which reminds them of a box. Put a square of flat cardboard or even fabric on the floor and they will do the same thing. It's something new to explore, deposit their scent on, claim, whatever.
