The $8.7 million detail helping Dylan Larkin get traded from the Red Wings

Dylan Larkin requested a trade but has a no-trade clause, which makes things tough on the Detroit Red Wings.

There is at least one part of his contract that is working in Detroit's favor, though: his salary.

Larkin is due $8.7 million per season for the next five years. That's a quite attractive rate for a gold medal center who has been the Red Wings' captain.

If Larkin were on the open market now, he'd make at least a few million more per season than that.

The Red Wings will take any little help they can get in getting an adequate return package for Larkin, a player they surely didn't plan on losing this offseason.

The Athletic's Chris Johnston recently ranked Larkin as the No. 1 player on his offseason trade board, with that salary helping the cause for sure.

"Larkin is a speedy two-way center who is an ever-present threat to score," Johnston writes. "He can handle big minutes and tough checking assignments and is known as a competitive player who battles his way to the difficult areas of the ice. While his playoff experience is limited to just five games, Larkin was a strong performer for Team USA at the Milan Olympics and 4 Nations Face-Off. His contract makes him an even more attractive asset because he’s locked in at a reasonable rate of $8.7 million for the next five seasons."

Larkin reportedly has only approved a potential trade to three teams at the moment: the Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild and Vegas Golden Knights.

As playoff contenders, those teams don't necessarily have a ton of salary space to work with, but Larkin's deal is more friendly than it could be.

And if Larkin eventually gets more teams into the mix, his salary will remain a selling point.

The Red Wings, at this point, just want a fair return. Larkin's contract will help that happen.
