The New York Yankees may be looking for a new closer this offseason.
David Bednar is an impending free agent after converting 35 of his 39 saves. If Bednar declines the qualifying offer and winds up with another organization, the Yankees will pivot to Plan B.
However, Plan B might be an upgrade over Bednar. It will certainly cost them more in prospect capital.
The Yankees could target Mason Miller from the San Diego Padres, the most dominant closer in the Majors.
FanSided's John Perrotto recently spoke to "multiple baseball sources" about which teams could inquire about Miller, and the Yankees were listed as one of them.
Perrotto's proposal sends right-handers Elmer Rodriguez and Carlos Lagrange to the Padres, as well as shortstop Dax Kilby.
"The Padres could plug the two 23-year-old pitchers into their rotation next season to try to reach the postseason for a fourth consecutive year. At the same time, the 19-year-old Kilby is a longer-term play," he wrote.
It makes sense that Rodriguez would be included in the deal. The Yankees have a surplus of starting pitching.

Lagrange's future as a starter is up in the air, as the Yankees moved him to the bullpen at Triple-A in June. One day, the flamethrower could be a future lockdown closer.
Kilby has impressed at Single-A and the Arizona Fall League, stealing 12 bases with more walks (39) than strikeouts (31) in 154 plate appearances in the Florida State League.
The Yankees are high on all three players, but Miller is an uncommon talent who was practically unhittable in 2026.
