Ottawa Senators forward Drake Batherson was on the receiving end of a firestorm of criticism from fans following his team’s 4-3 overtime loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night.
The criticism did not stem from his egregious blunder that led to Alex Newhook’s game-winner. The backlash came from his reluctance to speak with the media following the game.
As such, fans lashed out at Brake Batherson on social media. Here’s a look at what some fans wrote on X:
“That's what the weak minded do,” a fan wrote. “Is that because he cost them a win?” this fan weighed in. “What a joke, at least own up to it. Ullmark spoke of immaturity, and this is an example,” another fan chimed in.Meanwhile, other fans attempted to make light of the situation. Here’s a closer look at what these fans posted on social media:
“Too busy delivering pizzas,” a fan remarked. “He just wants to watch the end of the Jays game,” this fan commented. “Running late for his shift at Lépine?” another fan posted on X.Drake Batherson’s ghastly gaffe cost the Ottawa Senators a crucial point in the standings. But the club will hope to get back in the win column as they take on the Boston Bruins on Thursday night.
Drake Batherson not only Senators player in the doghouse
On Saturday night, Drake Batherson wasn’t the only Ottawa Senators player in the doghouse. Depth forward Kurtis MacDermid found himself riding the bench as he only played 2:04. The enforcer was on the ice long enough to earn a minor penalty for retribution on a hit to Jake Sanderson.
Senators coach Travis Green essentially played with 11 forwards the rest of the game. But Green found himself in a tight spot when Nick Cousins left the game following a tussle with Jayden Struble in the third period.
That situation left the Senators with 10 forwards, including MacDermid, sitting on the bench. MacDermid has been inserted into the lineup to provide toughness against the Canadiens. However, his play hardly impressed Green, leaving MacDermid in the doghouse for the entire night.
Now, questions surround MacDermid’s place in the lineup. There’s a good chance he’ll go back down to the AHL, though the Senators may need him in the lineup, considering they may be without Nick Cousins for some time.
The team will hopefully provide fans with good news regarding Cousins’ injury situation. In the meantime, both Kurtis MacDermid and Drake Batherson could get another chance to get back on track in the Senators’ next game.
