Can I, for one, just say thank god that Keri Russell and her A-plus political thriller are here to save us from the drought of good and sexy TV shows?
We are just one week away from Season 3 of The Diplomat dropping on Netflix and it has me in my feels over the last two seasons and their reliable history of making me gasp and wish I had a privacy screen on my laptop. I truly cannot remember another show that has been such a source of both heart-racing moments and scenes that make you glad your mom isn’t around. Maybe Scandal? Olivia Pope would be proud of what Kate Wyler (Russell) is getting up to across the pond.
That said, as we approach the third season of this remarkable drama, I think it’s only fair that we take a look back at not only one of the sexiest moments from Season 2, but some of the bold and flirty moments that sparked my love of this show in the first place.
Of course, when we’re talking about hot scenes from Season 2, we have to mention all of Kate and Hal’s (Rufus Sewell) provocative arguments, which are always tinged with as much lust as there is loathing. It’s totally fine if you disagree with me but there is simply no hotter repartee between two characters than those who hate each other a little bit but also have endless amounts of sexual chemistry.

This exact dynamic is apparent in pretty much every scene between this married couple, but even more so in the scenes where talk turns into action. One particular scene that always gets to me is in Season 2 Episode 5 when they are discussing the attack on a British ship and Hal reveals that it was U.S. Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) who had the idea to order the op. During their verbal altercation, things quickly turn physical with Hal ultimately lying on top of Kate to try and get her not to place a call that could ruin a lot of lives. Even when they’re not being overtly sexual, it still reads as alchemy that could turn NSFW at any given moment.
Another incredible moment comes from Season 2 as they’re chatting in bed and Kate finally admits that she wants to be the next VP. As she tells him this, Hal all but jumps on top of her (is this his MO or something?!) and immediately starts caressing her. “You are the hottest fucking thing I’ve ever seen,” Hal tells Kate as he rubs her leg and goes to kiss her neck. “I know, right?” She responds, laughing as their more loving sides win out over their bouts of resentment.
Can’t these two crazy kids just put their weird struggles behind them and just have crazy hot sex all the time in this show? Why must they torture us with their back and forth? Oh, probably because it only makes it hotter, now that I think of it.
While we don’t particularly need to go back to Season 1 to think of hot moments, it is important to at least note that this show has always been chock full of hot scenes, and not just between Hal and Kate. We know our girl has some off-the-charts chemistry with Dennison (David Gyasi), and nearly every scene with these two is ripe with innuendo. Their chemistry is palpable as well and gives Hal a serious run for his money in the all but physical war over Kate.
I think it’s also important that we look ahead and cross our fingers as fans of the show to hope that on top of even more Kate scenes, Season 3 might include a little something between now-President Grace Penn and her husband, played by Bradley Whitford. Although part of me does think it will be weird to see The West Wing reunion end in something sexual between CJ Cregg and Josh Lyman. But also, a part of me is curious, so I say go for it.
