Some may say the best six weeks of the year in the state of Texas is finally here.
Following another exciting regular season, it’s finally high school football playoff time in the Lone Star State, a six-week period that captivates fans of all ages from small towns to the major metropolitan areas.
Starting this week, teams get ready for the proverbial “second season,” in hopes their journey culminates at AT&T Stadium in Arlington next month, playing in the University Interscholastic League state finals.
Among the teams vying to make it to “Jerry World” are Southlake Carroll, which is 10-0 and ranked No. 7 in the recent edition of The Sporting News Top 25 national rankings. The Dragons reached the 6A Division II title game last season before falling.
Another undefeated squad from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex is Allen. The Eagles are also 10-0 and were ranked No. 12 in the SN National Top 25. From the Houston area, defending 5A DII champion Richmond Randle was ranked No. 15, and the Lions are also 10-0.
Aledo, which has claimed a UIL-record 12 state championships, also enters the playoffs at 10-0. But the Bearcats, ranked No. 16 in the SN Top 25, are determined to make it back to Arlington after falling in the 5A DI regional finals a year ago.
Two other teams that have won state titles in recent years, Duncanville and South Oak Cliff, came in at No. 18 and 19, respectively, in the recent SN Top 25. Duncanville played only eight regular season games, but the Panthers are 7-1, with their lone loss by a single point to Waxahachie. One of Duncanville’s wins came against South Oak Cliff, the lone loss for the Golden Bears as they proceeded to go 9-1 entering the playoffs.
In 4A, defending champions Celina and Carthage have picked right up where they left off last year. Celina, last season’s 4A DI champion, enters the playoffs at 10-0, the same as Carthage, which claimed the 4A DII title, its 10th in program history, all under coach Scott Surratt.
