Texas guard Tre Johnson projected top-10 pick ahead of 2025 NBA Draft tonight

Texas Longhorns guard Tre Johnson is set to be one of the first names called in tonight’s 2025 NBA Draft, with the event tipping off at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN. The prolific freshman scorer is widely projected as a high lottery selection, with most major mock drafts slotting him solidly within the top eight picks. 

Johnson, who led all NCAA freshmen with 19.9 points per game last season, earned SEC Freshman of the Year honors and showcased his elite shooting ability by connecting on 42.7% from the field and 39.7% from three-point range. His scoring prowess stood out despite operating in a Texas offense often criticized for its lack of movement and secondary actions. 

While Johnson’s primary impact comes as a scorer, he also averaged 2.7 assists per game, demonstrating flashes of playmaking, particularly when passing out of double teams. His shooting consistency, both off the catch and on the move, has made him one of the most coveted offensive talents in this year’s class.

Draft projections for Johnson vary, but there is consensus that he will not fall far. The Charlotte Hornets at No. 4, Utah Jazz at No. 5, New Orleans Pelicans at No. 7, and Brooklyn Nets at No. 8 are all considered possible landing spots. The Jazz, in particular, have been linked to Johnson throughout the pre-draft process and reportedly conducted extensive research on the guard, who expressed enthusiasm about the possibility of joining the team. 

“Hearing my name called at number five, that’d feel great, knowing that I could come in and try and help any way for them to help them win,” Johnson said of the Jazz during media day. 

Johnson’s draft stock has fluctuated slightly in recent weeks. Early projections had him as a top-five lock, but some recent mocks suggest he could slide as far as eighth, depending on team needs and draft-night trades. Regardless, his reputation as the best shooter in the class and his strong pre-draft workouts have kept him firmly in the lottery conversation. Johnson is poised to become the latest Texas Longhorn to make the leap to the NBA. He will bring his dynamic scoring and high-upside shooting to whichever franchise calls his name.
