Terry Rozier gambling investigation, explained: Latest details on federal probe into Heat guard

7 hours ago 1

A tumultuous month of January for the Heat was defined by the Jimmy Butler saga, and it ended with one of their players under federal investigation.

Guard Terry Rozier found himself as the subject of a federal gambling investigation, the Wall Street Journal reported. While Rozier was not charged with any crime, any hint of a gambling violation by an active player sounds alarm bells throughout the NBA after then-Raptors forward Jontay Porter was banned for life in 2024.

The potential violation occurred when Rozier played for the Hornets, but it's a distraction the Heat had to deal with. However, as of July 2025, it is unclear if Rozier is involved in the scandal or not.

Here are the key details to know about the investigation into Rozier.

Terry Rozier gambling investigation, explained

Federal prosecutors investigated Rozier for any connection to suspicious betting activity regarding a March 23, 2023 game between the Hornets and Pelicans

Rozier left that game after less than 10 minutes of action with what was labeled a foot issue and didn't play again in what was a lost season for Charlotte by that point. Bettors were "parlaying the unders on Rozier's statistics, including rebounds," ahead of the Hornets' game against the Pelicans, ESPN reported

The investigation was not exclusive to Rozier, as it was actually connected to a "sprawling ring of gamblers" who are accused of rigging games "across the sports landscape." That investigation already resulted in the lifetime ban of former Raptors forward Jontay Porter.

The NBA, however, said that it already investigated the suspicious betting activity surrounding Rozier and didn't find a violation. The league said it was cooperating with the federal investigation.

Rozier's lawyer strongly denied the claims. "We are aware of the NBA's 2023 investigation which determined there was absolutely no wrongdoing," attorney Jim Trusty said in a statement, adding, "We are confident that the ongoing government investigation will arrive at the exact same conclusion."

The game in question was played nearly a full year before the contest that alerted sportsbooks to suspicious betting activity surrounding Porter.

One March 23, 2023 tweet from a bettor caught the attention of NBA fans on social media after the allegations were reported. "Got lucky that I was fed some inside info that Rozier was leaving in the first or second quarter," the tweet says.

At least I was in on it today. Got lucky that I was fed some inside info that Rozier was leaving in the first or second quarter (depending on game flow and live lines) so that his unders would hit. https://t.co/D71oCvED2G pic.twitter.com/QZ1u7rzrCY

Rozier remained an active member of Miami's roster during the investigation.

On June 30, 2025, ESPN's Shams Charania reported that Rozier was cleared of any involvement in the betting scandal. On July 15, however, NBA insider Chris Haynes reported that Rozier has not been cleared of any wrongdoing and remains under federal investigation.
