Terrifying footage shows tractor trailer slam into New York overpass, tip over on busy highway

Shocking footage captured a huge tractor-trailer slamming into the bottom of a New York highway overpass — sending debris scattering across the roadway and nearby drivers swerving to safety.

The wild wreck happened Monday around 12:20 p.m. on I-87, where the New York State Thruway passes through South Nyack, and was captured on the dashcam of a AAA garbage truck.

A tractor trailer was cruising in the middle lane and right before the South Broadway overpass the driver appears to slam on the brakes.

The truck struck the bottom of the overpass and heeled over onto its right wheels — before a cloud of debris shot across the highway.

The entire rig then tipped over and slid on its side, blocking three lanes of traffic.

Startled drivers slammed on their breaks and switched lanes to avoid colliding with the truck.

Miraculously, the driver of the tractor trailer — 50-year-old Pernell Harris — was unhurt, according to the New York State Police.

But somebody sitting in an unlucky Toyota sedan parked in the breakdown lane by the bridge was evacuated and hospitalized. The extent of injuries remain unclear, but they were expected to survive, CBS News reported.

Harris did receive a ticket for driving an over-height vehicle, according to LoHud, while the crash remains under investigation.

Two lanes of traffic were closed as teams descended on I-87 to clean up.

The South Broadway bridge was struck before in a similar incident in 2023, CBS reported.
