Tennessee football makes long-awaited Chaz Coleman decision after months-long uncertainty

The Tennessee Volunteers have been hard at work this summer, but one question has lingered since players returned to campus. Transfer Chaz Coleman did not participate during the spring and was also absent from summer workouts.

There were several unusual developments surrounding Coleman, as different reports continued to emerge. At one point, Coleman deleted his Instagram account after fans criticized him over a social media post.

“Tennessee EDGE Chaz Coleman has deleted his Instagram amid a post from earlier this month going viral online. The Penn State transfer has yet to arrive in Knoxville for voluntary workouts, and continues to be one of the most confusing storylines of the offseason,” Vols reporter William Patteson posted.

The issue for Coleman was that he didn't have the same avenue out that former quarterback Nico Iamaleava had during his dispute with Tennessee.

“Last April, reports surfaced that Tennessee and Iamaleava were in NIL negotiations and he was then absent from spring practice. He also missed the spring game before ultimately transferring to UCLA and leaving the Vols scrambling for a new starting quarterback with little options available. That has the Coleman situation feeling all-too-familiar as Coleman could become Nico 2.0. The biggest difference between now and then is there's no spring transfer window this year so Coleman actually has no way out, no matter how much he apparently regrets not going to his home state Ohio State,” All For Tennessee’s Dekota Gregory wrote.

On Friday morning, Tennessee finally reached a resolution with Coleman. He was removed from the roster after being medically disqualified.

“Tennessee has parted ways with Penn State transfer EDGE Chaz Coleman, PeteNakos and Clowfb report. Coleman has been medically disqualified from the Vols' roster,” On3 posted.

The situation between Tennessee and Coleman can now finally be put to rest. It is disappointing that head coach Josh Heupel lost one of his top transfer additions, but regardless of what ultimately led to this outcome, it was clear both sides were ready to move on.

Now, Tennessee can focus on the players currently on the roster instead of wondering about someone who may never have suited up. The Volunteers still have plenty of questions to answer before the season begins, but their most lingering offseason storyline has finally come to an end.
