Team Canada's Connor McDavid-Nathan MacKinnon line change gets rave reviews at Olympics

Team Canada pushed the turbo button late in the first period on Friday.

Connor McDavid and Macklin Celebrini were on the ice for an offensive zone faceoff in their Olympic matchup with Switzerland. Head coach Jon Cooper sent Nathan MacKinnon out there to join them.

All of a sudden, they had created the most super-charged even-strength line in the tournament.

Canada stuck with it the rest of the game, and it worked wonders.

"I’ve played right wing lots in my career," MacKinnon said, via TSN. "I understand the position and obviously playing with the best player in the world and maybe the second best player in the world in Macklin, it was a lot of fun.”

Tom Wilson had been playing with McDavid and Celebrini, and he already had an assist on Friday before being demoted.

It's hard to blame Canada for such a change, though. Having these three superstars on a forward line together is incredible.

“They are three phenomenal players, generational these kids,” Cooper told TSN. “But, in saying that, you don’t know how that chemistry is going to go all the time. They’re three centers. Now some guys have to take a step back. Not a step back, but play a little bit out of position. And, ultimately, they are three guys that want the puck and need the puck and there’s only one puck, and now sacrifices have to be made. But, ultimately, they did it.”

MacKinnon also added: "I'd be lying if I said it wasn't cool."

Canada hasn't publicly shared whether this line will continue when it plays France in the final group game on Sunday, or into the knockout rounds.

But it's clear they have that move if they want it. Other teams surely don't want to see too much of that trio on the ice together.
