Taylor Swift Receives Artist Director Honors at 2026 MTV VMAs: Here’s Her Speech

Taylor Swift received the inaugural Artist Director Honors at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night (Sept. 27), dedicating the win to her fans before having MTV broadcast the world premiere of her latest music video, “Patient Zero.”

“I got to start making music videos and being a part of music videos 20 years ago, and since then I’ve gotten to be a part of making 60 music videos, roughly 60,” said Swift, holding a Moon Person and wearing a black and silver Tamara Ralph Couture dress on the VMAs stage at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, where she gave a brief acceptance speech. “Eighteen of those I wrote and directed, and I really love writing and directing music videos. I gotta tell you, though, the main reason why I love writing and directing music videos so much is because you, the fans, make it so much fun. You make it so rewarding. You actually care about what we’re making.”

She continued, “I want to say thank you to everyone who ever worked on a music video that I got to be a part of. I learned something from every single person that ever worked alongside me on one of these projects.”

“Mainly I want to say thank you to the fans, and rather than saying anything else,” Swift said, “I think rather than keep talking I would love to, if it’s OK with you, show you my latest music video, starring my friend Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell.”

Dakota Johnson, who co-stars in Swift’s “Patient Zero” unveiled during the VMAs, presented her friend Swift with the honor, introducing the star as “not only one of the most decorated artists in the history of the VMAs” but the “single most recognized video director.” Johnson said Swift “is storyteller” who “still holds the artistry and the cardinal virtue to never lose sight of the ineffable magic magic spark at the center of it all.”

After the intro, a behind-the-scenes segment of Swift making many of her music videos, and the thank-you speech, Johnson and Swift stayed on stage to tune in to the “Patient Zero” video premiere with everyone else in the room.

The Artist Director Honors launched this year to recognize “groundbreaking music artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music video and advanced the art of visual storytelling,” according to the original announcement of the honor. It “celebrates a sustained and influential body of work from artists who have pushed creative boundaries and developed a clear directorial voice.”

Swift’s past credits as a music video director include “Opalite,” “The Fate of Ophelia,” “Fortnight,” “Karma,” “Lavender Haze,” “Bejeweled,” “Anti-Hero,” “Willow,” “Cardigan” and more. She also directed All Too Well: The Short Film. Her collection of directed projects can be found on her official website.

Before this year’s VMAs, Swift was already the recipient of a total of 30 Moon Persons. Four of those were wins in the best direction category.
