Sixth seed Taylor Fritz will square off against seventh seed Alex de Minaur in the group stage of the ATP Finals 2025.

Fritz scored a routine 6-3, 6-4 win over Lorenzo Musetti to begin his campaign in Turin. He took on top seed Carlos Alcaraz in his next group tie. The American overcame a break deficit in the first set, and then had the last laugh in the ensuing tie-break to take the set.

Fritz was on track for an encore in the second set, only for Alcaraz to turn the tide in his favor. The former served to force a tie-break at 6-5 when the latter broke his serve to take the set. Fritz's level dipped ever so slightly in the third set, which was enough for Alcaraz to pull ahead. Even though the American saved three match points, he ultimately lost the match 6-7 (2), 7-5, 6-3.

De Minaur went down 7-6 (5), 6-2 against Alcaraz in his first match of the group stage. He was up against home hope Musetti in his next match. Both players started off strong but ultimately the first set went the Italian's way after a three-game run towards the end.

De Minaur captured the second set in similar fashion, bagging three games on the trot to level the proceedings. He was on the cusp of victory after going up a break in the third set and serving for the match. However, Musetti pulled the rug from underneath him with a four-game run to beat the Aussie 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.

Fritz found out the hard way that despite playing at a very high level, even a minor stumble against Alcaraz can prove to be fatal. De Minaur's nightmare run at the ATP Finals continued with yet another loss. He went 0-3 during the group stage last year as well. He will be keen to avoid another washout in Turin.

However, there's a silver lining for both Fritz and de Minaur. All players from their group still have a shot at qualifying for the semifinals. However, with two losses, the Aussie has the toughest path of them all.

De Minaur's defensive tactics have matched up well against Fritz's offensive shotmaking, with their rivalry being deadlocked at five wins apiece. The American has won their last two matches, including a comeback win at last year's ATP Finals.

De Minaur has struggled mightily against top 10 players. He has gone 1-10 against them this year, his worst run since his 0-6 record against them in 2021. Based on the Aussie's results against top class opponents, Fritz will be favored to win this contest.
