The Demon Slayer series has some of the most interesting sets of characters. However, the character writing for the protagonist was exceptional, to say the least. Not only did fans love him, but the author also used this character as a tool to explore various themes. This is what makes Tanjiro an incredible character.
The author aims to convey certain messages through Tanjiro. Much of what the author wishes to communicate can be analyzed by looking at the character’s personality and how he handles difficult situations. Here’s how the Demon Slayer series utilized Tanjiro to explore one of the most important themes in the story.

Demon Slayer: Tanjiro’s personality is connected to one of the most important themes in the story
There are various ways to convey certain messages throughout the story. Koyoharu Gotouge, however, decided to do this through Tanjiro Kamado. One can sense that the protagonist has many responsibilities throughout the story. While the most important one would be to act as the glue that holds the entire cast together, Tanjiro’s responsibilities were quite nuanced.
Kindness, even in the face of adversity, is a strength that cannot be compared. While the likes of Sanemi and Obanai might fuel their efforts with anger and frustration, Tanjiro didn’t do that. Despite losing his loved ones to demons, he held a certain degree of compassion. This made him stand out from others. The Demon Slayer Corps suffered a massive loss in their attempt to defeat Muzan.
The deaths didn’t go in vain, as they defeated the Demon King. However, only two Hashiras remained at the end of the battle. Tanjiro was one of the few survivors. In battle, one needs to tame their emotions to take on their opponents. When we let emotions get the better of us, we lose the ability to make the right decisions that could determine whether or not one would live.
These microdecisions stack up and ultimately decide the victor of any battle. Tanjiro’s ability to have complete control over his emotions allows him to take the best course of action. He lost his entire family because of Muzan’s actions.
Nezuko, the only remaining family member, was transformed into a demon. The Demon Slayer protagonist could have given in to his hatred while taking on the Demon King.
However, he remained calm and composed. He managed to use the Breath of the Sun techniques and landed decisive hits on Muzan towards the end of the battle. While it certainly was a team effort, it is hard to ignore Tanjiro’s contribution here. His compassion and empathy laid the foundation for his combat abilities, which ultimately helped the Demon Slayer Corps emerge victorious in the end.
Conclusion
Tanjiro’s kindness is one of the most important lessons that the author wanted to convey in Demon Slayer. There are plenty of reasons why fans love this character in the series. However, what they need to understand is that this character was a tool to explore one of the biggest themes in the series - empathy. This is also the foundation for the protagonist’s strength and combat abilities.
