Ta’Niya Latson scored 20 points in her South Carolina debut to lead the No. 2 Gamecocks to a 94-54 win over Grand Canyon on Monday night.
Latson, the nation’s leading scorer last season at Florida State, opened the game with a layup and scored again on a slick drive moments later as the Gamecocks jumped out to a quick lead. This marked the 15th consecutive opening victory for coach Dawn Staley.
South Carolina took a 60-31 by halftime. Staley utilized all 10 available players from a roster thinned by injuries and departures, including SEC Tournament MVP Chloe Kitts, who is sidelined for the season.
All five Gamecocks starters ending in double figures. Tessa Johnson added 19 points for the Gamecocks, who dominated with their size and tempo.
Raven Johnson added 11 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, and three steals. Ale’jah Douglas led Grand Canyon with 16 points.
South Carolina hosts Bowling Green on Friday.
