Swanky California market linked to dangerous bacterial outbreak across the state

San Diego County officials are investigating a market in Ramona for the alleged salmonellosis outbreak in the region that left 13 people fighting the bacterial infection.

Authorities believe Ramona Family Naturals Market, near the Collier County Park, used raw, unpasteurized eggs to make mayonnaise that cause the illness.

Customers who got sick are all between the ages of 27 and 60. Four individuals were hospitalized following their worsening symptoms.

Ramona Family Naturals Market boasts of providing “fresh, natural and organic” items.

The investigators said they were working with the market’s owner to identify the source of the eggs that may have contained the bacteria.

“The market’s owner has been working closely with the County’s Environmental Health and Quality and Public Health Services and has stopped using raw, unpasteurized eggs in all its food products,” San Diego County officials said in a statement Tuesday.

Health officials are advising individuals who may have been exposed to Salmonella after dining at Ramona Family Naturals Market to monitor their health and contact their healthcare provider.

Symptoms of salmonellosis include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea — potentially containing blood or mucus — abdominal cramps and fever.

These symptoms typically appear within 12 to 72 hours of consuming contaminated food and generally persist for four to seven days. Most cases resolve without medical intervention.
