With summer in full swing, I'm here to to remind you to wear your sunscreen. The timing couldn't be more perfect because July is also UV Safety Awareness Month.
Excess UV exposure can lead to sun damage in the form of sunburns, dark spots, and in some cases, skin cancer.
So if you're taking part in any outdoor activities this summer, from BBQs to beach days, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends taking the following steps to prevent sun damage, regardless of your skin tone.
We know that it's not always possible to stay in complete shade or avoid peak sunny hours. But with these derm-approved tips and tricks, you can prevent unwanted sunbruns all summer long.
Ultimately, sun protection is the most important part of your skin care routine. And by now, we all know we should be wearing sunscreen every day (yes, even when it's cloudy). But did you know that UVA and UVB rays damage your skin in different ways? Yup!
According to the Skin and Cancer Institute, UVA rays are responsible for aging while UVB rays lead to burning. Both are equally harmful, so for that reason, derms suggest opting for a broad spectrum sunscreen since they protect against both types of rays. Reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.
And you might as well toss out any sunscreen with an SPF less than 30 as that's the current minimum dermatologists recommend.
I never go outside without a wide brimmed hat, but experts also suggest wearing sun protective clothing.
