Summertime sadness? Changing your hair may help — this is what I used

Need a mood boost? Change your hair color.

A 2025 article, published in the European Journal of Medical and Health Research, detailed how people who dyed their hair experienced measurable physiological benefits, including a decrease in cortisol levels and an increase in dopamine during the transformation phase.

The reason? Witnessing a physical change of one’s own choosing triggers a sense of autonomy and freedom. In short: it’s empowering.

And it doesn’t need to be drastic, like when Kim Kardashian ditched her jet-black hair for icy platinum blonde. Subtle changes, per science, are enough to activate the dopamine reward pathway, which is all the more reason to consider sprucing up your ‘do — even if it’s with something as simple and DIY-friendly as hair gloss.

That was basically what I was trying to do when I accepted an invite to a styling experience at Beauty Supply Salon with celebrity stylist Emaly B and her team. The star product? Glaze Supergloss, a product you’ve likely seen on HairTok, which has earned a reputation for delivering shinier, healthier-looking hair in only 10 minutes.

I’ve glossed my hair before, so I knew I wasn’t likely to leave looking like an entirely different person. What I was hoping was that I’d witness just enough of a change to make me feel less depressed about the ending of summer and, hopefully, more excited for fall and all the new style opportunities it presents.

What sets Supergloss apart from other glosses you may have tried is that it doesn’t just coat hair in a toner, but uses a professional-grade blend of light-reflecting pigments. This not only makes hair look glassy but adds depth to the overall color.

I opted for the Supergloss in Sleek Espresso, good for medium to dark brunettes who want something cooler and more sultry.

I had the help of Emaly B to pick my color, but there is also a Shade Finder on the Glaze site if you need guidance on selecting your own. Each formula lists who it’s best for, so it’s simple enough to narrow down which one will reap the desired results.

It’s available in 15 different shades, ranging from sheer to Glace Cherry (great for redheads) and the brand’s latest, Raven Black, specifically made for virgin dark brown to black hair.

All formulas are vegan and cruelty-free, and don’t contain silicones, parabens or ammonia. Babassu oil adds softness while strengthening strands and fighting frizz, and vitamin E reduces breakage and moisturizes the scalp.

Results last up to 10 washes.

How to use

Beyond helping your hair look and feel healthier, Supergloss is designed to be easy to use. After shampooing, apply the product in place of conditioner, working it through like a hair mask. Give it 10 minutes, rinse and then style. See? Super easy.

I do want to note that you should wear gloves. I know there are some TikToks of people applying the gloss without them, but like the Devil, people on social media can be liars.

Do yourself and your hands a favor and just buy a box of gloves.

First impressions

That study I mentioned earlier — the one about how changing your hair lowers cortisol and boosts dopamine — also listed the tactile experience of having one’s hair done as a reason for its mood-altering effects.

The scent, the touch and the physical change all work together to create a positive impression on your brain, and I must say, having Supergloss applied professionally made me understand that all the more. Having someone wash my hair and give me a scalp massage is right up there with a skinny margarita or freshly washed sheets —  a small but luxurious feeling.

It’s hard to replicate a professional treatment at home, but I can tell you having a scalp massager and a wide-tooth comb to detangle your hair before you let the gloss set helps.

Also, Supergloss just smells nice. It has that fresh, quintessential salon-smell that signals to your brain you’re doing something fancier than usual, so if you’re constantly seeking a “spa vibe” in your own bathroom, this will become a fave.

The brand describes Supergloss as a “tinted moisturizer,” and I would say that’s accurate.

Within five minutes of the gloss setting in, I noticed my hair (curly and dry) felt silkier and more manageable. Much of that comes from the oils in the formula, along with the fact that there aren’t any irritating ingredients.

Those who’ve used the gloss at home report similar results. “This is a brilliant product,” one shared. “Really brightened up my color and left my hair very soft and shiny.” Another wrote:

“Worked like a charm. I have only used a Blonde Glaze so far. But it removed all of the brassiness from my hair and made me look straight out of the salon! I was shocked that it also made my hair super soft and shiny! Keeping this product in the rotation!”

Results

I was in love with how my hair turned out, but since it was styled by professionals, I wasn’t really surprised.

The real test was how my hair looked after I rewashed it and styled it on my own.

Was I still impressed after I pulled out my Revlon Blowdry Brush and styled it? Yes. The pigments helped to highlight some of the natural color variations of my hair, which I like. I also noticed that my hair looked less dry and more vibrant.

Application was super easy, and the gloss didn’t stain my tub — my biggest concern as a renter.

The change isn’t dramatic, but you’re not going for drama if you’re reaching for a gloss. You’re going for a boost — something that refreshes your look, not drastically alters it. For me, Supergloss didn’t disappoint, and while I won’t say it’s made me less bummed about summer being almost gone, I do feel more invigorated for the change of season.
