‘Summer House’ Reunion: What Is BPD?

1 hour ago 3

Ciara Miller wasn’t the only one laying her soul bare in the first part of the Summer House Season 10 reunion. KJ Dillard, who joined the show this season as a friend of West Wilson, opened up about his struggles with mental health, as well as a recent diagnosis that helped him on his path to recovery.

Dillard—who is currently dating his co-star, Dara Levitan—revealed toward the end of the episode that he was hospitalized for a week last fall for self-harm, before spending “a few months” in recovery.

“I got to focus on myself. I needed that because I think my whole life, I distracted myself and ran away from my issues instead of facing them head-on,” he shared. “But now I’m better. I’m in therapy. And I’m on medication. I got diagnosed with BPD when I was in the hospital. I’m grateful that I’m here, alive, because I could have not been.”

Dillard said he was “thankful” for the support from his friends in the cast, namely Miller and Mia Calabrese, who were with him “almost every day” when he was in the hospital. He added, “I’m very thankful that the audience is just embracing that because it’s my truth and I’m not gonna not be honest about what I go through, especially if it can help others.”

Dillard, who has been open about his struggles with anxiety and mental health on the show, mentioned that he was diagnosed with BPD last fall. If you’re not sure what that means, we have you covered. Keep reading for everything you need to know about borderline personality disorder.

What is BPD?

BPD is the acronym for borderline personality disorder, which, according to the Mayo Clinic, is a “mental health condition that affects the way people feel about themselves and others, making it hard to function in everyday life.” Per the outlet, symptoms include a strong fear of abandonment, a pattern of unstable relationships, impulsive behavior, threats of self-harm and suicidal ideation, mood swings, and periods of stress-related paranoia. As Dillard mentioned, BPD can be treated through therapy and, in some cases, medication.

Does KJ Dillard have BPD?

As mentioned before, Summer House star KJ Dillard was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder when he was hospitalized last fall.

In a since-deleted Instagram post from November 2025, Dillard opened up about his “life-changing” diagnosis, which came after more than a decade of struggling with “attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety, and depression.”

“For years, my mental health has been a thorn in my side. It’s a topic that I often write about it in my music, but rarely share online,” he wrote in the post. “On social media, it’s easy for me to hide behind a screen, post my highlights and act like everything is okay when in reality everything is not. It’s okay to not be okay. That’s what community is for. This isn’t a cry for help, or anything like that, but more of a ‘I’m a human being human’ post. This is my surrender. It’s a time for me to peel off a temporary bandage on a permanent wound. To anyone else hurting, I’m healing with you…”
