Sultan of Brunei strips daughter-in-law of royal titles over ‘unbecoming’ behavior

The Sultan of Brunei stripped one of his daughter-in-laws of all of her royal titles after she allegedly disrespected him with behavior “unbecoming” of the royal family.

Pengiran Raabi’atul Adawiyyah, 33, was accused of showing a lack of respect to Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, 80, the world’s longest-reigning living monarch, according to national broadcaster RTB News.

The announcement did not specify what exactly Pengiran did to offend the sultan, nor did it provide any additional information about the incident.

The Office of the Grand Chamberlain, which made the announcement, said the matter was a royal command issued by the sultan himself.

The revocation was carried out following conduct by Pengiran Raabi’atul Adawiyyah that was deemed unbecoming of a spouse of a member of the royal family,

Pengiran married Prince Abdul Malik in 2015, with the couple enjoying a lavish, 10-day ceremony in the royal palace.

The couple has four children, Princess Muthee’ah, 10, Princess Fathiyyah, eight, Princess Khaalishah, six, and Princess Nabeelah, 16 months.

Their father is fourth in line to the throne of Brunei, a tiny nation surrounded by Malaysia and the South China Sea.

While the Sultan has revoked Pengiran’s royal titles, those of her children were left unaffected, according to the palace.

Bolkiah has served as both Brunei’s sultan and prime minister ever since the country gained independence from the UK in 1984.

The sultan was previously the target of international backlash, with stars like George Clooney and Elton John protesting his proposal of carrying out the death penalty in Brunei for gay sex and adultery.
