If you want your makeup to last all day and night for weddings, festivals, and special events, we've got the best tips from someone who can actually help.
Long before “clean beauty” and TikTok makeup trends dominated the conversation, Jeanine Lobell helped define an entire era of beauty. As the founder of Stila Cosmetics, one of the most iconic makeup brands of the ’90s, and former creative director for Kevyn Aucoin, Lobell created products that translated runway glam into real-life makeup people actually wanted to wear.
Today, she’s channeling that same philosophy into her colorful, sustainability-focused brand Neen. E! got to ask the beauty icon about how to get glam to last, the easiest way to apply eyeshadow and lips, plus a lot more.
The beauty founder knows exactly what it takes for makeup to last through hours of cameras, lights, and waiting. “Even when you go to the red carpet, you sit in that car for an hour plus because of the line to get in,” Lobell tells E!.
In other words: if your makeup can survive that, it can probably survive anything.
"First: don’t experiment for important events. Stick with products you know work. If you’re unsure about a foundation, get a sample and test it," she said.
"Second: don’t over-moisturize. Put your moisturizer on, let it absorb, and blot any excess. Too much moisture breaks down foundation. Primers can sometimes add unnecessary layers and make makeup look heavier. Instead, notice where your foundation disappears—like dry patches—and use something slightly heavier there," the celeb makeup artist explained.
La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer
This is the perfect "slightly heavier" moisturizer to put on dry patches. It's designed to deliver up to 48 hours of hydration and help restore skin's barrier in just 1 hour.
"Obviously, we all know that setting spray helps. Back in the day we literally used hairspray, like Aqua Net, to set makeup because there was no setting spray," she said.
Luckily, you can use something like the affordable option below to lock makeup in place.
e.l.f. Power Grip Dewy Setting Spray
This super-fine bi-phase makeup setting spray may help grip makeup for long-lasting wear with a hydrated, dewy finish.
"Also, choose one focus," the Neen founder said. "If you’re doing a bold red lip, keep the cheeks soft and the eyes clean with lashes. If you’re doing a smoky eye, go with a nude lip. And don’t create a look that requires constant fixing. Lip gloss, for example, won’t last six hours. If you use gloss, fill in the lips with liner first so it fades evenly."
Neen Lined Up Lip Liner
“Our lip liners are super ’90s," the celebrity makeup artist said. "When I made the first set of lip liners, they’re all in that kind of no-warmth family, so you really get that perfect contour kind of lip, which is very ’90s.” Choose from three colors.
Neen Glisten Up Lip Gloss
Neen lip gloss goes on like butter, has great shine and color payoff, and smells like vanilla. Choose from eight gorgeous colors.
“Sometimes I'll put tinted moisturizer on the lip to sort of kill the color, be able to create a new shape, and have the color stay better and stay more true," she advised.
And if you're headed to an event like a red carpet or a wedding, and planning to wear eyeshadow but might be a little nervous about application, Jeanine says it's easier than you think, you can even skip all the little brushes.
"Honestly, fingers work great," she said. "Our shimmer shadows are so creamy that people often think they’re creams. Just take a color that’s not too dark—like a peachy shimmer or lavender—and use your finger. Start close to your lashes and pat upward. You’re done."
Neen Pretty Shady Pressed Pigment
