Steve Cohen has New York Mets in position to land one of the best pitchers in baseball history

The Detroit Tigers know better than anyone that if they don’t give Tarik Skubal what he wants, the ugly days might come back quicker than ever. For much of the past decade, Detroit has been a below-average team.

That was until Skubal became the elite of the elite.

The issue for the Tigers is that if they want to keep him around, it’s going to require them to give him the biggest deal for a pitcher in MLB history. Think of the New York Yankees, New York Mets, and Los Angeles Dodgers as three teams that could sign him.

Zachary Rotman believes the New York Mets could enter the picture, adding that he’s not interested in taking a discount.

“If the Tigers were unwilling to even entertain the thought of paying Skubal now, how can anyone choose to believe they'll win a bidding war with the likes of the Dodgers, Yankees and Mets in the mix?” Rotman wrote. “It's clear that Skubal is not interested in taking any sort of hometown discount to stay with Detroit based on how he's acted this entire process.”

The Mets, led by billionaire owner Steve Cohen, have shown they’re willing to spend to get stars. David Stearns has a bit of a different outlook, but he’ll still go out and add a starter of Skubal’s character if given the green light.
