Mets fans are allowed to say what they want about David Stearns, but not to the detriment of others’ fan experience.
Owner Steve Cohen explained the viral moment in which a fan holding a “Fire Stearns” sign was thrown out of Citi Field. Mets fans were not happy — and Cohen has no issue with that.
“People want to express themselves, I don’t have a problem with that. In fact, I support that,” Cohen said to The Post’s Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman on “The Show” Podcast. “When they get to the point where there are people around them complaining that they are ruining their day at the ballpark. Well, you have a right to express yourself, but not to the point where you’re ruining other people’s experiences.”

“Supposedly, the person was belligerent,” Cohen explained. “They were told to just be a little bit more respectful. Clearly, according to my people – I wasn’t there, I don’t know what fully happened, I am only responding to what I was told – he wasn’t. To sit there and say, well, ‘You’re thwarting people’s ability to express themselves.’ That’s a bunch of bulls–t. OK? Express yourself as much as you want. You want to chant ‘Pete Alonso,’ chant anything you want.
“If you get to the point where you won’t sit down and you’re ruining the experience of people behind you, that’s unacceptable.”
Cohen added that anyone saying that this version of the Mets under his leadership is not fan-friendly is “nonsense.”
In the wide-ranging interview with The Post, Cohen explained that Stearns would not be fired, among other eye-opening comments about the state of the team.
The Mets are 36-50 and in last place in the NL East.
The Mets are expected to be sellers at the July trade deadline as their team falls into the depths of despair, having just fired manager Carlos Mendoza.
