Stephen Curry and LeBron James partnership may not be impossible

The Golden State Warriors are widely known to have long maintained an interest in LeBron James, and for the first time, a credible financial mechanism exists to make it happen.

The key is the non-taxpayer mid-level exception, and how the organization handles Kristaps Porzingis will determine whether that door stays open.

On The Hoop Collective, NBA insider Tim Bontemps laid out the best path for Golden State to land James, pointing to the Warriors' roughly $15 million NTMLE as the vehicle to bring him in.

It would require the NBA's all-time leading scorer to take a massive pay cut, though it may be a path he is ready to consider if he wants to leave the Lakers.

Golden State must remain under the first luxury tax apron. Porzingis is the central figure in this scenario. If he takes less than $25 million next season, it opens room under the first apron.

This situation allows the use of the NTMLE. Essentially, Golden State faces a choice now. They must decide whether to re-sign Porzingis or use the full exception.

The situation is complex and unavoidable for Porzingis. He averaged 16.1 points and 5.3 rebounds. Additionally, he recorded 1.1 blocks in just 15 games.

Unfortunately, injuries plagued his performance throughout the season. His main issue involved postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, commonly known as POTS. This diagnosis created further complications during the season. It also significantly impacted his upcoming free agency.

Due to his health issues, Porzingis is unlikely to receive a long-term contract. However, teams will value him when he is healthy. This situation actually benefits the Warriors greatly. A short-term, friendly deal in the $7.5-$15 million range makes sense.

This keeps Porzingis on the roster for a reasonable price. It also preserves the NTMLE's needed cap flexibility. This is crucial for successfully pursuing James.

There is no doubt that the Warriors have a solid chance at signing James. This is true if he only receives the NTMLE. He has expressed interest in playing alongside Curry for years. James is also friends with Draymond Green.

Signing both James and Porzingis requires precise execution. The right blueprint is already there for Mike Dunleavy Jr. The Warriors need discipline to follow this plan effectively.
